What Makes Mobile RPG Progression Actually Feel Good
I've bounced off more mobile RPGs than I've finished, and after a while the reason became obvious. Bad progression feels like a chore list. Good progression feels like you're getting better, not just numbers getting bigger.
The games that nail it tend to give you meaningful choices early. A branching skill tree where picking one path means giving up another makes every level-up feel personal. Compare that to systems where you just pour points into the same stats and win.
Pacing matters just as much. If I have to grind the same fight twenty times to progress the story, I'm out. The best games reward you for playing the content that's already fun, not for re-playing it.
Emberfall Saga does this well, which is why it keeps coming up in our chats. You get gear from quests you actually wanted to do anyway.
My rule of thumb now: if a game makes me open a spreadsheet to understand it, I probably won't finish it. The best progression explains itself while you play.
