Can Mobile Strategy Work Without Drowning In Menus?

May 6, 2026 · Lukas Bergmann

Strategy is my favorite genre on PC and my most frustrating one on mobile. The depth I love usually comes buried under a dozen tabs and tiny buttons that aren't made for thumbs.

The games that survive on my phone solve the interface problem first. Iron Dominion is a good example; it keeps the important decisions one tap away and hides the complexity until you ask for it.

Combat helps too. When positioning matters more than clicking fast, the touchscreen stops being a disadvantage. You can take your time, think, and move deliberately.

I've learned to judge a mobile strategy game in the first ten minutes purely on how it handles menus. If I'm already lost, it's not going to get better.

Give the slower, turn-friendly strategy games a chance before the real-time ones. They tend to play nicer with a phone.
